Safety Hazards to Avoid with Your Dump Trailer
Dump trailers make many backbreaking jobs relatively simple, but they are large machines, and moving a lot of material with them can be dangerous. To ensure your safety and the safety of others around you, it's crucial to be aware of potential hazards and take steps to avoid them. Here are some common safety hazards to watch out for when using your dump trailer and tips on how to avoid them.
Bed Collapse
One of the more common hazards is when the bed collapses while being lifted, dropping suddenly and potentially crushing whatever is below it. It can either be caused by user error or if the lift mechanism is weakened. To avoid it, ensure all employees are properly trained, then install a lift arm to help prevent a full collapse. Also, keep everyone out from under it while it’s lifted.
Trailer Tipping
Another common issue is the trailer tipping over, most often caused by a sloped parking spot or uneven cargo distribution. You should always aim for flat ground and try to distribute material evenly throughout the bed. You’ll want to avoid raising the bed when the wind picks up.
Power Lines
Finally, a lifted bed could potentially hit power lines. Anyone in the cab will be safe thanks to insulation from the tires, but anyone in contact with the trailer itself will be in danger. Always know the raised height and avoid parking under any obstacles within reach of the raised bed.
