Definition

Gooseneck trailers are named for their unique hitches, which look similar to a goose’s neck curving up and then back down. This hitch allows them to hook into a truck’s bed, allowing the weight to rest on the rear axle rather than the bumper. This has a number of advantages, including increased hauling capacity and more agility thanks to the overlap between the trailer and tow vehicle. It does, however, limit tow vehicles to trucks only, if you want to make full use of the hitch’s benefits.

Type

Because a gooseneck hitch can be on any trailer, it’s still important to know exactly what kind of trailer you’re looking for. Cargo and utility trailers can be great for carrying just about any cargo you could need while dump trailers are perfect for carrying and dumping loose material like dirt or debris. Tilt trailers can more easily load wheeled containers and vehicles while flatbeds can carry anything no matter the shape and size.

Axles

Once you know the type of trailer you need, determine your ideal number of axles. Single-axle trailers are easier to tow and tend to be lighter weight and are perfect for lower-weight cargo. The heavier your cargo, however, the more axles you’ll likely need. Two or more axles can handle significantly more weight, though, making them a necessity for some.
